MHS football’s ‘Celebration of Champions’
The Montclair High football team will commemorate its storied history during its "Celebration of Champions," a two-day event on Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 8.
On Nov. 7, the team will host a "Champions Reception," during which the 22 Mountie State championship teams will be honored. On Nov. 8, before MHS’ 1 p.m. home game against Hackensack, a "Mountie Tailgate" will take place near the newly renovated Robert "Fuzzy" Furlong Field House. During halftime, the 22 teams will be honored again and State championship flags will be unveiled.
All former Mounties and Montclair High football fans are encouraged to attend the weekend’s events. The Mounties encourage all those interested in attending to RSVP by Saturday, Oct. 25.
Mark Bavaro book signing at Yogi Museum
Former New York Giants star Mark Bavaro, widely considered one of the toughest and best tight ends in NFL history, will be at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. to sign copies of his acclaimed novel, "Rough and Tumble."
Bavaro, who played most of his nine-year NFL career with the Giants (1985-90), was a pivotal contributor during the team’s Super Bowl XXI and XXV championships. An All-American at Notre Dame, he later earned the nickname "Rambo" due to his intense playing style, quiet personality and physical resemblance to Sylvester Stallone.
Books will be available for purchase at the museum, which is located on the campus of Montclair State University. Proceeds from event will benefit the museum’s education programs. For more info: 973-655-2378.
Republic Records Yankees offers tryouts
The Republic Records Yankees Baseball Club with be holding tryouts during autumn and winter for the spring 2009 season of its AAU house league and travel teams.
For boys ages 6 through 10, the club fields two divisions, according to skill and age, for its house league. The Yankees will also field four travel teams: 8U, 8U (AA), 9U and 10U. Tryouts begin the week of Nov. 17 and continue during the weeks of Dec. 8 and Dec. 15. The final tryout will be take place in 2009 during the week of Jan. 5. All interested players must attend one tryout.
