New hours and admissions: In addition to remaining closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, it will remain accessible on Tuesdays by appointment to school and adult groups, and Yard School of Art students.

The Museum will reduce its Wednesday through Sunday hours to noon to 5 p.m. Yard School of Art students and school tours will still have access to the museum during morning hours by appointment.

Admission will increase to support the escalating costs of providing service. New admission is $12 for nonmember adults and $10 for senior citizens and students with identification. Free admission continues for members and children under 12.

Admission will be free on the first Friday of every month. Previously, admission was free on Fridays only from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

CLASSES

Van Vleck House and Gardens: On Saturday, Oct. 18, a mini retreat will be led by yoga instructor Jillian Pransky in the gardens from 2 to 4 p.m. Cost is $40 in advance, $50 at the door. After the retreat, refreshments will be served. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. Proceeds from this event benefit the education programs at Van Vleck House & Gardens and the Montclair Cooperative School.

On Monday, Oct. 20, the beginning of a six-week program, which will meet from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Van Vleck House. The cost is $108 for Friends of Van Vleck, $120 for others. Participants will receive individual attention while learning basic yoga postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques.

Volunteer advocates needed: The Essex County Rape Care Center is seeking volunteer advocates to be a sympathetic ear and an unbiased source of information, working with sexual assault survivors to ensure their physical, emotional and psychological well-being and providing hope in a time of great devastation.

The Essex County Rape Care Center is seeking volunteer advocates to be a sympathetic ear and an unbiased source of information, working with sexual assault survivors to ensure their physical, emotional and psychological well-being and providing hope in a time of great devastation.

Advocates must attend initial training at Family Service League, 204 Claremont Ave. Duties include responding to calls on the crisis hotline; accompanying those survivors who request it to a hospital, police station and/or prosecutor’s office; assess immediate survivor needs and provide referrals and follow-up services; and document phone calls and accompaniments.

Volunteer advocates must be over 21 years of age, have reliable transportation for accompaniments, be on call for two four-hour shifts per week, have outstanding communication skills, be very dependable and have a complete understanding of confidentiality.

Help Bereaved Children: The Comfort Zone Camp, a nonprofit bereavement camp for children ages 7 to 17 who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver, seeks volunteers to help out for a weekend of traditional camp fun, where 60 to 70 children play, laugh, meet other children and learn coping skills while paired with an adult volunteer "big buddy." Other volunteer roles include healing circle leaders (licensed counselors), art project assistants, floaters, nurses and a few junior counselors (ages 15 to 18). The next NJ Weekend camp will be held Oct. 24 to 26 in Blairstown, with several more planned for 2009.
