Obama sign defaced in Montclair

(by Tanya Drobness - October 02, 2008)

A Montclair woman woke up Sunday morning to find that her Barack Obama lawn placard was spread across her car and defaced with a pile of dog feces.

Vandals yanked the advocacy sign out of the Montclair Avenue lawn and wrecked it between 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, and 7 a.m. the next day, police said.

"She just woke up in the morning and noticed the sign had been moved," said Alex Russoniello, referring to the reaction of his partner, Maryanne Solensky, who has been living in the home for 30 years.

The sign and one of its metal posts was found on the windshield of a Volkswagen Golf that was sitting in the victim’s driveway, police said.

The couple removed the feces with a newspaper delivery wrap and washed down the sign.

They put it back up that same day.

Investigators noted that three Obama signs posted on other properties on Montclair Avenue were not disturbed that night.

The sign was placed into the lawn about three weeks ago, in a prominent spot that is clearly visible from Fairfield Street.

"I love that my sign was in such a prominent place, and there was no way that I wouldn’t put it back up again," Solensky said.

She said it was the first time she had ever put up a political sign.

"It really angered me that someone had come onto my property. At that point I really thought it was a kid," Solensky said. "I don’t feel that anyone was targeting me personally. I think it was a political statement."

Liberal-leaning Montclair proved to be an Obama stronghold earlier this year, when the Illinois senator took a commanding lead in town over New York Sen. Hillary Clinton in February’s Super Tuesday contest, though Clinton triumphed overall statewide.

Placard-pulling also disturbed another Montclair residence last week.

Richard Insley, 62, came back to his Christopher Street home on Sept. 22 after vacating in Seattle to find his Barack Obama placard missing.

It had been jammed in front of a hedge between his front lawn and the sidewalk for about two weeks.

"I’ve had them taken down before. I have no idea who did it," Insley told The Times.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, a John Kerry sign was removed from his lawn, the Hackensack attorney said.

"In a way, I just felt that if people are that upset by it, maybe it was a good thing it was up there," Insley chuckled. "But it seems kind of silly to be taking down these signs. It’s just childish."

While his presidential sign was targeted, signs endorsing other politicians have not been yanked out of Insley’s lawn, he said.

This time around, Insley intends to replace the missing sign with two Obama signs.

"And if they take down the two signs, I’ll put four up."

I had lived in Montclair for 39 years moving away 11 years ago. It was my understanding that political signs were not allowed on lawns. Has the ordinanc changed?
