Oct. 5 tour of Franklin Street Art Studios


Ten accomplished New Jersey artists will present their work at the Franklin Street Studios located in Manufacturer’s Village in East Orange on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. This will be the second time the artists in this "Studio Community" will be opening their doors to the public since its inception in February of 2007. Visitors will have the opportunity to view each artist’s studio, see their methods, works in progress, as well as completed works. The afternoon is free to visitors and light refreshments will be served.

Artists include Leslie Ford, Rachel Leibman, Tom Nussbaum and Philomona Williamson, all of Montclair, and Mona Brody, Kathryn King Eddy, Rayna Gillman, Rita Klachkin, Kaaren Patterson, and Deborah Ugoretz.

Leslie Ford: Natural forms and memories inspire Leslie Ford’s art. Shapes found in shadows and spaces in landscape, still life and the figure are her current influences. Ford is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University with a B.F.A. in design. Ford’s art direction and design have helped grace and shape and look of numerous publications, including Town and Country, Sports Afield, Seventeen, Woman’s Day, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Parent’s Digest. Ford’s awards include DESI Awards for Excellence from Graphic Design: USA, CBS awards for layout and photo editing, American Institute of Graphic Arts awards for cover design, and awards from the American Institute of Architects.

Rachel Leibman: Collage artist Rachel Leibman uses small pieces of paper as her palette and "paints" colorful, detailed and often elaborate pictures. They are called "illuminations" and are composed of images of ancient manuscripts. Leibman’s collages have been shown in many solo and group exhibitions throughout New Jersey and New York including the Broome Street Gallery in Soho, Synagogue for the Arts in Tribeca, The Morris Museum, Pierro Gallery in South Orange, ETS in Princeton, and the Arts Guild of Rahway.

Since 1987 he has completed over 25 site-specific public and private commissions located in train stations, hospitals, and environmental centers, as well as a variety of corporate settings. His smaller sculpture has been shown in galleries throughout the United States and Japan, most recently at the Metaphor Gallery in New York, and the Hunterdon Museum of Art in New Jersey.

Nussbaum was awarded a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship in 2001, three MacDowell Colony Fellowships, and a 2008 fellowship to the Virginia Center for Creative Arts. He has upcoming exhibits at the New Jersey Visual Art Center in Summit, and The Nicolayson Museum in Casper, Wyo.

Philomona Williamson: Philomona Williamson’s paintings are intriguing, surreal tableaux of post-adolescent search for identity. Her works draw on the trials of adolescence to illuminate the vagaries of adulthood.

Williamson is an internationally renowned artist whose work has been exhibited across the United States, the Netherlands, and Ecuador including the Queens Museum of Art, African American Museum, Powers Art Gallery in Pennsylvania, and Wenger Gallery in Los Angeles. Her experience includes serving as adjunct faculty for Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cooper Union, and serving as visiting artist at Webster University in Missouri and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In November 2008 Williamson’s new paintings will be on view at the June Kelly Gallery in New York City.
